Excellent periodontal health is not only important for your oral health, it’s critical for your overall body’s health as well. A number of studies link poor gum (periodontal) health to diseases such as heart disease, stroke, respiratory illness, Diabetes, Osteoporosis, and certain types of cancer.
Our expert dental hygienists, Vicki and Tammy, perform annual screenings for periodontal disease, updating and comparing previous periodontal charting measurements against current findings. These measurements assess the following critical signs and symptoms of periodontal disease:
- Gum pocket measurements around each tooth.
- Inflammation, bleeding, swelling of the gums
- Gum recession
- Loose teeth
- Loss of supporting bone around molar teeth
We also examine your dental x-rays to look for tartar deposits (calculus) beneath the gum tissue. Patients can effectively care for teeth with gum measurements of 2-3 millimeters with regular brushing and flossing. Our gentle, effective and thorough dental cleanings can address gum pockets measuring 4 millimeters. Periodontal pockets measuring 5 millimeters or more will need additional treatment to restore optimal gum health.
Scaling and Root Planing
A non-surgical gum treatment option, scaling and root planing allows gum tissue to heal naturally. During this procedure, we provide local anesthesia to the affected area so Vicki and Tammy can clean calculus (tartar) deposits without any pain.
